Sweet Georgia peaches...
Yes, I am a Georgia Peach! Born and raised in Georgia, I grew up with a love for peaches.
Fort Valley (Peach County), Georgia is celebrating the Georgia Peach Festival, June 11th-19th, and you can bet my mama will talk my brother J.D. into driving her over...if only to get some fresh Elberta peaches. The purpose of the festival is to honor peach growers for their contribution to the Georgia state economy. There will be concerts, an arts & crafts show, fireworks, food, and of course the de rigueur parade featuring the Miss Georgia Peach beauty queens.
Here are the winners of the Miss Georgia Peach Pageant 2010...they are soooo pretty!!
From left: Junior Miss Georgia Peach - Lizzy Stanford of Cuthbert; Miss Georgia Peach - Lauren Arnold of Blakely; Tiny Miss Georgia Peach - Lucy Luttrell of Warner Robins; Teen Miss Georgia Peach - Lindsay Dobbs of Perry; and Little Miss Georgia Peach - Mariah Percival of Bonaire.
A Southern tip: Remember that fresh Georgia peaches are available only 16 weeks each year...from Mid-May to August.
Peach cobbler is an old-fashioned Southern dessert and one of the most popular Southern comfort foods. It's been a Southern staple for generations and I'm celebrating peach season and serving "husband" some peach cobbler, using the recipe my mama prepared for so many years..."Miss Pauline's Peach Cobbler."
Now y'all, Southern Living magazine is featuring "Mama's Way" or "Your Way" peach cobbler recipes this month. Since I simply cannot compete with the picture-perfect peach cobbler featured on their June cover, I''ve prepared mine "Miss Pauline's" way!
"Miss Pauline's Peach Cobbler"
"Miss Pauline's Peach Cobbler" recipe:
1 egg
1 cup sugar
3 tblsp. flour
1 stick margarine (melted)
1 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 large can of peaches
Strips of bread slices
Mix the first six ingredients together in a large bowl. Place the sliced peaches in the bottom of a greased baking dish. Pour the mixture over the top of the peaches. Place the strips of bread on top and bake at 350 degrees until brown. Serve with vanilla ice cream...oh-so Southern and delicious, also!!!
Enjoying some peach cobbler this weekend on the front porch at "The Roost"...
Still celebrating National Iced Tea Month...perfect time for some peach-flavored iced tea!
What is the proper way to eat peach cobbler with ice cream???
If you were just served the peach cobbler, you would use a fork. Of course, if you were served only the ice cream, you would use a spoon. When there is a dessert fork and spoon placed on the table, you know you are in for a real treat!! So the cobbler and ice cream would be eaten with a fork and a spoon. The fork is held in the left hand (prongs down) and the spoon in the right. The fork only serves as a pusher. Then, you eat with a spoon. When using a dessert spoon, remember to take small portions and eat only from the front of the spoon.
It's peach season y'all...Bon Appetit!!! Thank you so much for stopping by to visit with me!

Lord how I miss eating fresh peaches from a road side stand, and pit bbq,and Brunswick stew and sweet potato pie and pretty girls with good manners. They are the real Georgia peaches! I must have really loved my wife to have left all that ,at least that's what I tell myself!
When I saw the title of your post come through, I immediately thought...as a Georgia girl myself, I must leave a comment with an Elberta peach reference and see if you respond....lo and behold, you mentioned it before I got to the comments....they are simply the best thing about summer....sliced, cobblered, fried pied or homemade icecream!!!
I love peach cobbler. I eat butter instead of ice cream on mine. I may have to make one next weekend using Miss Pauline's recipe. YUM! That would be good with a tall glass of iced tea.
Every Georgia girl I have ever met has been the most gorgeous girl...gorgeous just like those Georgia peaches!
I remember my friend's mom being from Georgia and she truly was stunning, elegant, and full of class. As a young girl growing up, she was a stand out to me and I always was in awe of her. She was a true beauty.
Your peach cobbler looks delish Miss Janice! And the peach queens look lovely... reminds me of my teenage pageant days! But how I would have loved to be have been a Miss Georgia Peach!
I'm a Georgia peach too! Born in Marietta :-)
Oh, how yum!!! I love your little "We Don't Care How You Do It Up North" tea towel! I had cocktail napkins that say that, too...but sadly, don't use them much now that I'm in MD!
I'm a Georgia Peach also. I love cobbler, so I will definitely try this one! Peaches in Georgia are amazing right now. I ate one this morning hanging over the kitchen sink because it was dripping down my hand! :)Thanks for the recipe!

I loved this post Miss Janice! Being a GA peach is so fun isn't it!
Oh how I love peach cobbler! I'm actually going to try bringing a new version to a picnic this weekend: peach/black raspberry cobbler. I hope it comes out ok! I sure enjoyed that issue of SL. Wasn't it summery?
Oh how yummy! We have a little place outside of Fredericksburg, Texas. They are known for their peaches too...although I am sure they are not as good as Georgia peaches;)!
I am always looking for new recipes for my peaches...I am going to give yours a try! Thank you!
Enjoy!
Cathy
This looks divine ~ I will certainly be making this in the very near future. The ice cream is a must have in my book.

Well, Miss Janice, it looks like I am going to have to make a peach cobbler using Miss Pauline's recipe. Looks soo delicious!

Peaches and Pageants? I cannot think of a sweeter post! Pretty and yummy all wrapped up together. I love peach picking in the south, and as a child, I remember my daddy getting out the old-fashioned ice cream maker and we would whip us up some REAL peach ice cream! Peach cobbler is one of my all-time favorite desserts, and I plan on making it this weekend (if I can find myself some southern peaches up here in MA) for my father who will be visiting for father's day!
Oh Lord how I love peach cobbler. I got in the bad habit of making double cobbler when I made it. Whipped cream and lots of cobbler...yummy.
We're getting ready for the Peach Festivals here in SC. I just read we grow more peaches than GA, which surprised me.
Thanks for sharing your Mom's recipe. It looks so yummy!
Did you use French or regular bread?
Enjoy your week.
My sweet husband is a Georgia peach too! He says peach ice cream is even better than peach cobbler! Of course he loves it ALL. We have been eating our Georgia peaches here in Florida and always look forward to this time of year!
Miss Janice i do love peaches...

I'm confused... why don't you use fresh peaches in your cobbler? I was really hoping to see how you defuzz/skin them....
I was just going through my Southern Living magazine to see what I wanted to keep out of it and I saw the peach cobbler recipe and thought, 'I want to make Miss Janice's!' What bread do you use for yours? THANKS! Looks so yummy!
