SOCIAL GRACES...SOUTHERN STYLE GIVEAWAY FOR MY 100th POST!

Well, I can't believe I have published 100 or so posts! Before I talk about my celebration, I want to say that I do read and truly appreciate all of your comments to me. I won't make excuses why I'm unable to respond to every single comment on an individual basis--but let's just say I spend so much time reading interesting blogs and creating posts for my blog, that it leaves me so little time for one-to-one correspondence.

To celebrate, I want to offer a gift that will be meaningful and represent what my blog is about--Social Graces...Southern Style. I started thinking about the massive amount of e-mails I receive daily and what people want to know from moi. There's the usual dining etiquette questions, appropriate attire questions, gifting etiquette questions, et cetera. What is the question I get the most? "How do I learn about Southern etiquette?" My reply is usually to direct the person first to social etiquette books, either by Letitia Baldrige or Emily Post. Then I recommend several books written by Southern authors about Southern etiquette, entertaining, hospitality, et cetera.

I can say that I was taught all the prissy Southern stuff at early age by my mama, her lady friends, my aunts, and etiquette teachers. These books I am giving away today will definitely give you the inside information on what we Southern ladies have spent a lifetime learning!

Miss Janice's Social Graces...Southern Style Giveaway

To start, I'm including the latest copy of Southern Lady magazine--a must-read for any Southern lady! This magazine, published by Phyliss Hoffman, always delivers beautiful tablescapes, recipes, and loads of Southern lifestyle inspiration. Next, there are three books by Deborah Ford, famous for "GRITS--Girls Raised in the South." The first book is Putting on the Grits, A Guide to Southern Entertaining; the second is The GRITS Guide to Life, and the third is GRITS Friends Are Forevah. All of her books are excellent sources for those who want to learn about Southern etiquette.

The next book is A Southern Belle Primer, by Marlyn Schwartz. This is a great little book for Southern belle wannabes!

The last book is one of my all-time favorites What Southern Women Know, by Ronda Rich. You will absolutely adore this book!

This is the another linen shift from Appleseeds--the color is a bit boring for me, with the boring ivory cardigan from LL Bean over the shoulder...


After I accessorize, I like it much better. Here's a close up photo of what I'm wearing with it...My Gucci pochette and matching ballet flats (I love these shoes!), ivory color stockings, a gold monogrammed pendant and matching earrings, my Cartier roll ring wedding band, and a Chanel barrette adorning my ponytail. My fragrance and hand cream of choice today is classic Burberry--love this fragrance!For some strange reason, my photo of the shoes is blurry...the interlocking G's are not faded, no ma'am they are not:)

SHOPPING & LUNCH IN VERO BEACH

What a great way to get the weekend started...shopping at Lilly and lunch with an oceanfront view! Friday morning I drove up to Vero Beach to meet a new friend...she has asked that I protect her privacy, so I will call her "Lady J." We met through my blog and after numerous e-mails back and forth to make sure the other person had the right intentions, we both decided because of our love of Lilly, to meet and visit the Lilly store in Vero Beach--The Lazy Daisy.

We had so much fun shopping and I picked up several cute Lilly items! Afterwards, we walked over to The Ocean Grill. This restaurant has been serving locals and tourists since 1941. With it's old world eclectic charm and oceanfront views, it was the perfect spot to enjoy a light lunch. I so enjoyed getting to know my new friend over a great meal of crab cakes on a field of greens with mango salsa...yum yum!

Now, "Lady J" is a very accomplished lady; she's a member of numerous swanky clubs and organizations, has a beautiful condo in Vero Beach and and home waaaay up North somewhere. She is a mother, a daughter, a sister, a grandmother, and her husband has a very distinguished job. I was more impressed however, to hear about her love of God--she attends church everyday y'all--because she loves God! To seal the deal with Miss Janice, she is a huge Lilly lover. She invited me to visit her condo and I got to take a peek at her closet, loaded with all her Lilly. Y'all should have seen me...pilfering through her clothes!!! She said it was okay to take some photos, so, here they are...

I told "Lady J" I wanted to choose just one outfit that I really liked and display it. So, from the vintage to the new Lilly, I chose this darling shift...I believe the pattern is The Everglades Club. It's so cute! Can you believe she has these darling Lilly-fied custom hangers? They are too cute!


I have to say I had so much fun going through her closet. I think she had fun as well pointing out her favorites!

"Here's What I Was Wearing" The skirt is a pink & white gingham check skort by Lilly and the pink tee is by Lilly. I carried my Nantucket pocketbook and wore my pink Lilly mules. My ponytail was adorned with a white grosgrain ribbon bow and I wore a pearl necklace with the matching stud earrings, my Rolex Oyster Perpetual, and my Cartier roll ring wedding band. Even though there wasn't a lot of sun today, I wore my Chanel sunglasses. Lilly Wink was my fragrance of choice!

LILLY EVENT IN NYC!

Oh, how Miss Janice would love to be able to hop on a plane and attend this event! On Tuesday, June 2nd, Lilly is hosting a party with Town & Country Magazine and Brooke Shields, at the Lilly Flagship Store in New York City...doesn't this sound like a must-do! The celebration is for the launch of their limited-edition capsule collection, "A Colorful Cause." If you live near the area, you simply must take advantage of this invite!

As for moi, I'm visiting the Lilly store in Vero Beach tomorrow...possibly trying on the Brooke or the Elisabeth caftan.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

I hope y'all are having a great kickoff weekend to the Summer!

Not much relaxation for me this weekend...I've been very busy--working out at the gym, painting furniture, working in my garden, and today I attended a church I have been visiting. This was my third visit and I'm excited about this church. It's so hard to find a new church when you move to a new town! After services, I stopped by "The Square at Traditions" on the way home and tried the "Crepe Maker" for lunch. This was my first time to dine at this restaurant and I must say that I really enjoyed it.

To start, I enjoyed the Brie & Mushroom soup. It was very tasty, but I admit, I was a little shocked to be presented with a plastic soup spoon in a French bistro-style cafe. I also had the veggie crepe...The California--with pine nuts, marinated sun dried tomatoes, baby leaf spinach, tomatoes, melted mozzarella cheese, and pesto sauce.

"Here's What I Wore" today...

Y'all know Miss Janice wears only dresses to church, so I chose this cute little lime green linen shift. I purchased this shift from Appleseed's a couple of years ago in several colors and I wear them all soooo much. Since it's always chilly in the sanctuary, I wore my "Saks Real Clothes" black sweater throw over the shoulder.

Don't you just love my darling black ballet flats with the pearl adornment--I found these online at The Snappy-Turtle's website here. I carried my black Chanel 2.55 shoulder bag...with the silver chain, because the flats have a little silver ribbon attached. I wore ivory stockings...I was in church y'all--stockings are a must! Of course I wore my pearls with the matching pearl stud earrings. My ponytail was adorned with a black grosgrain ribbon bow. I did not wear my watch in church...not appropriate; but, I did wear my pearl bracelet and my Cartier roll ring wedding band. I polished it all off with a splash of Coco Mademoiselle cologne spray, hand cream, and Chanel dusting powder!

Preppy Sue has been a Lilly lover for a long time and she's turning her husband into one as well, with his Wellington polo...in "True Navy." She is wearing the "Willa Halter in Stowaway green Restless Native," paired with the "Bailey Capri in white." How cute and preppy are Mr. & Mrs. Preppy Sue!! They met in college and were married in the campus chapel. A few weeks ago they renewed their vows in a special mass at the same campus chapel! How sweet is that after almost twelve years of marriage?

Preppy Sue was fortunate to be able to attend the Martha Stewart/Lilly show back in March. She loves pink & green, Lilly, her family, and is a stay-at-home mom to "Little Man" and "Little Miss." Check out her blogsite...you will love it. She lives a beautiful preppy-styled life!

I Simply Must Take This Time To Say Thank You!

As my list of must-read blogs get longer and longer, I'm finding it very difficult to read all the blogs I love. The thing is...I HAVE TO READ THEM! I'm afraid if I don't, I'll miss something spectacular from all y'all! Everyday it's just like having a fabulous magazine delivered to my office...with all your beautiful tablescapes, recipes, garden photos, gifting ideas, cute stationery, home decorating photos, tips for preppy shopping, Lilly love, entertaining, and travel...well, you can see how I get so excited!

I would like to take a moment from visiting y'all to say thank you to several ladies.

Recently, Sheila, at Notesongs, bestowed upon Miss Janice her "Bathroom Diva" award. Lord have mercy!

You may remember this photo of moi at the grand opening of the Lilly Store in the Gardens Mall. Debbie, the sweet girl at Lilly snapped this photo of me in the ladies room because my Lilly "Croc Monsieur" patterned skirt matched the wallpaper. Miss Shelia grabbed it and crowned me "Bathroom Diva."


Notesongs was one of the first blogs I ever read and Miss Sheila is such a "Sweetie." She has a beautiful home, which she loves to decorate and she also creates awesome tablescapes. I'm not sure which one of us has the most china, but we both definitely love to collect dishes! Stop by and visit Miss Sheila and check out her beautiful blog. Yes, Miss Janice has been crowned "Queen of All Things Awe-summm!!!" I am required to list seven things that make me so awesome....Well, if I simply must....

~I host awe-summm parties--you will have fun!
~I give good gifts--I think so, at least:)
~I deliver comfort food to sick and grief-stricken people.
~I teach children how to behave.
~I teach adults who are back-slidin' how to behave.
~I would be beyond excited, but very comfortable taking tea with "The Queen of England."
~I can still cross the finish line with a smile on my face after competing in 5k races...just love it!

I love the Pink Martini blogsite--what's not to love about her? She loves to entertain, she loves Lilly, and she loves martinis! It just cracked me up that she's a Martha Stewart Wannabe (excluding the time in the slammer). Thank you Pink Martini--you are "Queen of All Things Awe-summm yourself Missy!!"

Speaking of martinis...Muffy at Muffy Martini hosted a Lilly giveaway with Lilly party products provided by the Preppy Princess...Yay--I WON!!!! So, an otherwise boring day was Lilly'd up when I received this box full of goodies all wrapped up in pink and green!

Look at all this cute stuff...it's so cute! The plates, napkins, tumblers, coasters, beverage umbrellas, matches, and place cards--all in the "Coco Patch" pattern.
When I entered this giveaway, I stated that I would like to use all the cute products during a Children's Etiquette class, ages 4-8. I love to serve a light lunch to reinforce the dining skills I teach the children and how cute would all these products be? I would probably add some Lilly manila folders for their take-home sheets, along with a Lilly pencil and a customized "Miss Janice" placemat, totally Southern and Memorable...don't you think? Of course, for that class, I'll wear a coordinating Lilly Shift and my assistant (a puppet--Catherine the Mannerly Cat), will be wearing her pearls just like Miss Janice. Oh, I need to schedule a "Modern Manners for Children" class," it is one of my favorite programs to teach.

She's Tamara at CancerSucksEvenWithLillyPulitzerOnYourSide! Here she is posing on Easter Sunday in Lilly-Wear with her daughter "Little Miss M." They are both wearing the adorable pattern "Sun Kiss Pink--Full of Grace, " skirt and pants.

She has three wonderful children, all different and all her loves; however, "Little Miss M" is her only daughter and they have worn matching Lilly since her birth! "Even though she's getting older, she will humor me with matching. I just love it and love her, said Tamara."

A Giveaway to Celebrate National Etiquette Week!

Yes, there is National Etiquette Week. It was established by Sandra Morisset in 1997 and is observed May 11th-15th. This is a time to recognize civility and good manners...and it all begins with you. In celebration of National Etiquette Week, I'm having a "Very Proper Giveaway." The winner will receive a copy of etiquette expert Letitia Baldrige's book, "New Manners for New Times."
Ms. Baldrige is recognized universally as the country's leading authority on business and social etiquette. Mother's Day Brunch

It's Tablescape Thursday and Susan at Between Naps on the Porch is once again hosting this awesome event. Susan is definitely the "Tablescape Queen," so stop in and check out her beautiful blog and all the tablescapes linked to this event!

Today, I'm featuring a Mother's Day Brunch tablescape. This Mother's Day, I will not be able to travel home to Georgia to visit my mama. However, she will be celebrating this special day with my brother.

Mothers are the most important people in the world. If you are lucky enough to still have your mama, please honor her everyday and make this Mother's Day special for her. In the South, ladies judge a gentleman by the way he treats his mama. I can tell you that my brother loves and respects our mama and treats her like she's the Queen. He's always driving Miss Pauline all over the place (to church on Sundays, to the beauty shop for her standing appointment every Friday morning, shopping, etc.--mama loves to scoot)!

A sweet Southern tradition on Mother's Day in the South...ladies are given a red corsage if their mama is still alive and a white corsage if their mama has passed away.

Today's feature is a Brunch that I had last year for my mama at my home in Mississippi.

Mother's Day Brunch Tablescape...Brunch egg casserole*, fresh mixed fruit, Southern-style biscuits, orange juice, and coffee.

Mother's Day Brunch Place Setting--The china is Accoutrements, designed by Anna Griffin for Lenox. The napkin rings are monogrammed, of course, and a silver tray is used as a charger plate .

Brunch Egg Casserole...

*Recipe for Brunch Egg Casserole
4 cups seasoned croutons
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
8 eggs, slightly beaten
4 cups milk
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
8 slices bulk sausage, cooked, drained, and crumbled

Combine croutons and cheese and place into a greased 3-quart baking dish. Combine eggs, milk, salt, and pepper; mix until well blended and pour over the crouton mixture. Sprinkle crumbled sausage on top. Bake at 325 degrees for one hour. Serves 8-12.

When I first saw this photo, I knew that I just had to feature it as my "Lilly Photo of the Week." Look at these darling girls!!! Have you ever seen a sweeter photograph?
I am so grateful to Tiffany Hoffman for sharing this family photo. Here she is (in the center) with her sisters--Miss Jinette on the left side and Little Miss Julia on the right side. How absolutely precious are they in their Lilly outfits! This is their Easter photo taken in front of the big fountain at Balboa Park in San Diego.

Miss Jinette is wearing the Lee Shift printed sateen in Multi Bam Patch and the Abygale Lilly Pink Cardigan. Tiffany is wearing the Kyle Shift printed sateen in Multi Bam Patch and the Paley Cardigan Passementerie in Lilly Pink. Little Miss Julia is wearing the Julia Multi Patchtastic Shift and the Abygale Lilly Pink Cardigan.

Tiffany said that her mom loves to dress the girls up and take photos for every holiday. I certainly understand why! She is definitely one proud mom, I'm so sure!

Run for the Roses

And they're off! Tomorrow, at 6:04 p.m. E.S.T. it's post time for the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby. In the world of sports, there is not a more moving moment than the one when the horses step onto the track for the Kentucky Derby post parade and the band strikes up "My Old Kentucky Home." Those ladies decked out in their spring outfits and gorgeous hats, what a fashion parade!

On Derby Day it's time for mint juleps*. It's not surprising that mint juleps are popular in the South, mint is a symbol of hospitality and this drink brings forth the ideal image of genteel gatherings sprinkled with that sweet Southern drawl...

*Recipe for Miss Janice's Mint Julep
1 tblsp. granulated sugar
8 mint leaves
1 tblsp. water
4 oz. Kentucky bourbon
Crushed ice
Sprig of fresh mint

Place sugar and mint leaves in a small bowl. Bruise mint well and muddle with sugar until they form paste. Add water and stir well. Add bourbon; pour into julep cups (which have been frosted in the freezer) and fill with crushed ice. Insert sprig of fresh mint and silver straw. Each julep should be made separately.

It is considered proper to drink mint juleps with a sterling mint julep straw/spoon. Simply use the spoon to stir the julep and sip your beverage through the tiny hole at the end. This is one of the very few times a lady should use a straw to drink a beverage. It's also acceptable to use a straw when you are drinking a coke out of a can or when you've "taken ill and are in the bed."

I will be watching the race with friends...no fancy event. "Here's What I'll be Wearing." A very casual, but just darling Lilly shift with a butterfly print. The white cardigan sweater throw is from Land's End. I just love the embroidery work on this cute dress!

Since I simply cannot find a white cover for my Lilly Bermuda bag handle, I'm going with the lime-ish green cover and a lime-ish green ribbon bow for my ponytail. I'm wearing my brand-spankin' new white Bonanno's. The jewelry--a pearl bracelet, the matching pearl stud earrings, and my Cartier roll-ring wedding band

Hostess gift...hmmm, I found this Mint Julep mix at TJ Maxx awhile back. I kind of like the package, but that thing attached...and that tacky ribbon. No ma'am, it's cute, but not chic enough for me...

I took the julep mix out, placed it in a silver mint julep cup, made a gift card with several recipes on the back, and tied a silver mint julep straw/spoon with a green dotted ribbon. I wanted it to be Southern...and Memorable.

Saturday will be a fun-filled day for me. I'm starting my day running in the Turtle Trot 5K race in Jupiter, Florida. After freshening up, I will explore the town, come back home, rest a little and get ready for the Derby!

Happy May Day!

Fewer and fewer people celebrate May Day anymore. I think it's such a sweet tradition (bringing in May) to create a May Day Basket and leave it on someone's door handle--just ring the bell and run! You can give them to friends, family, or elderly neighbors. The basket can be of any shape or style and contain flowers, cookies, candy, or maybe even tea and scones. Here's one of my May Day Baskets. I used a green toile container, added some fresh spring flowers, and a green gingham ribbon to tie the basket to the door handle...very simple...very Southern.

Since it's the first day of May, I thought I'd also show y'all my "Friendship Gifts" for the month--Mint Julep teabags. They are inside the cute little thatched-style, cottage boxes and wrapped in cello, then tied with spring-ish gingham ribbon...definitely Southern.
