Step Inside My Closet

In response to requests from y'all...I'm inviting you to take a look inside my closet.  Although it's not large, nor is it "Pinterest Worthy," it works for me.

This little pink and green sign greets me every single day.  "Wear it well!"  I try!

I am a neat freak and even though I tend to "clutter up" everything, all my clutter is in order!  There's a white wicker table and a cute pink and green lamp inside the closet.  Sometimes I pull up a chair and sit down with a glass of Merlot and work on my "Wardrobe Inventory."

This is my "Wardrobe Inventory" binder.  Every single item of clothing I own is included in this inventory.  The outfits are broken down for Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter and Transitional.  I outline every outfit I wear...from the ponytail bow down to the ballet flats.  I am extremely OCD about this;  i.e., when I buy a new bracelet, all the outfits that I will wear with that bracelet must be updated.  Recently, I went through and had to delete Mlle Coco Chanel's wardrobe...all her little outfits that matched mine.  Boo hoo.

Believe me, there is constant updating going on...all the time!

I have been doing this for over 20 years...

I keep a calendar inside the binder to remind me of special dates.

You've probably seen this mannequin before...I move it all over the house.  If I'm rushed, I use the mannequin to photograph my outfit...of course, I plan my outfits the day before!

Pink chevron clothes tag...printed with the day of the week.

Of course, I love Lilly, but I don't have a closet full of only Lilly!  I also love J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and cute clothes from Target!

Tees and Turtlenecks...

Crewnecks...There's room for more!

Monogram totes...

Ferragamo pocketbooks.  Church Lady stuff!

Chanel pocketbooks...room for growth here also!

Bermuda Bags, clutches, and wristlets...

A couple of my Guccis!

Summer baskets...

I love totes and can never get enough.  I'm looking for a nice navy blue tote right now...maybe a Longchamp or Ralph Lauren.

I used shower hooks to hang the totes...they have a large loop at the bottom, perfect to hold the bags.

A monogrammed bucket full of flip flops...

Ballet flats and cardis...The cardi section has room for growth!

MORE ballet flats!

Misc shoes...clogs, loafers, and 'Church Lady' Ferragamos!  I've stored my long-handled umbrellas underneath.

Short-handled umbrellas...

The hair adornment area and lingerie chest...No, y'all are not going to have to look at my lingerie!

Monogrammed drawer knobs, of course.

A place for monogrammed sashes, scarf belts, and pony caps.

Belts...

A scarf hanger for a few of my favorite silk scarves...some of them I've had for 30 years and I still love them!  It pays to buy the classics y'all!  Left to right:  Dior, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Ralph Lauren, Givenchy, Gucci, Hermes, Dior, and Lilly Pulitzer.

Eyeglasses and iPhone covers.

So that's Miss Janice's Main Closet.  Husband just said, "Why don't you show them the closet you use for the overflow loot?"   {That's where I store formal wear, suits, blazers, coats, more pocketbooks, and more shoes}.  Well, I can't...it's organized, but still a bit crowded and messy!  I hope y'all have enjoyed the tour!

  1. I love this post! I always enjoy looking at other people's closets, and getting organization ideas!

I would love if you could do a post on time management/home organization. I always struggle with finding the time to work, volunteer, keep my house clean, plan meals, etc. Especially cleaning schedules for the house!

  17. That is just lovely!

I really love all your clever organization ideas, and the preppy colours you have added to the room. It sure helps that a major part of your wardrobe is in preppy colours^^

I would like to ask you something. I have been looking for a book (with preppy style) that says how to organize a wardrobe, what to wear when, what goes with what and what every girl should have in her wardrobe and with clothing proposals.

I read Bernard Roetzel's book about gentlemen: ''http://www.amazon.com/Gentleman-Timeless-Fashion-Bernhard-Roetzel/dp/3829020295

This book has everything one ever needs.. But it is for men. Do you know of any similar books like this or like I've explained, for women? I bought ''Preppy- IVY-league'', but it was mainly pictures. I have been thinking of buying the preppy handbook, but I am not sure it got what I want.

So sorry for this messy post, I just got so excited about this blog entry and had to write to you, while I am on the run.

Have a nice day, Miss Janice!

    Madeleine:)

  19. Dear Madeleine,

"The Official Preppy Handbook" and "True Prep" are 2 books that come to mind when I think of guidelines for the preppy dress code.

Another idea is to follow preppy blogs for the latest in preppy fashion:)

    Regards,

    Miss Janice

  25. Mrs. Janice...As I am sure you can imagine I am having a difficult time with my closet. With my recent knee surgeries which now have required wheelchairs, walkers and crutches; my wardrobe has been at the bottom of my list. Well...I did bring my own sheets, blankets and lounge wear to the hospital. My concern is two-fold. I am only allowed to wear athletic shoes. While they are comfortable and have a pink and green 'swoosh' the main color is white. So of course I am cringing mentally and probably physically when I must wear them public. Any ideas for more seasonally appropriate athletic shoes? Also, due to the huge brace I must wear on my leg, many of my transitional clothes are not fitting. So with the combination of white shoes in late September and wardrobe issues...I am staying home quite a lot. Any suggestions?

  27. Due to my recent knee surgeries this summer- I am.forced to wear athletic shoes. While they are cute Nikes with a pink and green swoosh - they are still predominately white. Any ideas for more seasonally appropriate athletic shoes. The other 'issue' I am having is two-fold. My transitional clothing does not fit over my knee brace- so I have been seen after Labor Day in white athletic shoes and shorts. (yes it really does bother me). My bigger issue is my use of a handicapped parking permit. I have had one since I was in my early twenties; I have used it much moreso recently. I had long khaki slacks on with a cardigan and those blasted athletic shoes...and as I was limping into Sam's pharmacy not one, not two but three people accused me of breaking the law by parking in the spot. Even seeing me limp(and I do not look healthy) these people verbally attacked me. If the people would have been my own age- I would have offered to remove my brace and beat them with it- but the complains were my grandmothers age! I don't want to play show and tell each time- but it has become more frequent. What would you do? And yes- I absolutely must park that close, I also use a wheelchair on occasion. Thank you in advance for any advice.
